For the inhabitants of the Scottish Hebrides, where
the McDonald brothers come from, distress at sea is a daily battle when ships
set sail. The only ray of hope in times of emergency is the radiance shed
by the lighthouse, warning ships of the Reef and affording them orientation.
"Save me!" is the cry for help in "Lighthouse" (CD Mara). It quickly comes
to mind that this is not only literally meant. "All the world's a ship, shipwrecked
on the seas" is what is written in the song. Who, then, is the Lighthouse? In literature God is often depicted as a saving beacon. With this in mind, and in conjunction with the other songs of Runrig, I believe that the lighthouse is a synonom for God. Should this be the case, then it is God who gives a person strength when in personal distress. Compare the summary under "In a Nutshell". |
